Student First Aid Basic Life Support

Basic Life Support DRSABCD - Patient is unconscious, unresponsive, not breathing normally.

 

Danger - Ensure safety for yourself, the patient and others.

Response - Ask their name, squeeze both shoulders. NO RESPONSE > send for help. RESPONSE > recovery position, check for injuries, monitor.

Send for help Call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance.

Airways - Check mouth and nose are clear of foreign objects. Open airway by tilting head back and lifting chin. NOT CLEAR > recovery position and clear airway. CLEAR > Leave on their back. 

Breathing - Look, listen and feel for breath for 10 seconds. NO NORMAL BREATHING > start CPR. NORMAL BREATHING > recovery position, check for injuries, monitor.

CPR - 30 chest compressions then 2 breaths in continuous cycles until an ambulance arrives or patient recovers.

Defibrillator - Attach a defibrillator (AED) as soon as possible and follow voice prompts. Continue CPR until responsiveness or normal breathing returns.
