Two Rockingham schools have come together to create colourful art murals promoting positive mental health and wellbeing.
Makybe Rise Primary School and Rockingham Montessori School worked with local artists last week after winning the City of Rockingham’s Take pART initiative, which encouraged young people to design a mural around the catchphrase ‘happy looks good on you’.
The City of Rockingham invited local schools to enter a competition to redesign a public space in a way that promoted the Act-Belong-Commit message through public art.
The two schools won the Hand-Drawn Design category, with the murals placed on to two walls at Rockingham’s newly reopened PCYC.
Rockingham PCYC manager Travis Young said the centre was proud to be involved with the engaging project and the winning schools.
‘It was fantastic to see some of the different talent and skills that we have in the Rockingham area from our local youth,’ he said.
‘The paintings will help create a sense of ownership for the students who have contributed to the project and we look forward to continue to work with the City of Rockingham on similar projects such as this, engaging local youth in the area and encouraging the use of our fantastic facilities.’
City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the new program aimed to create a strong connection to space among young people by recognising the contribution they are capable of making and enabling the successful entrants to see their designs become a reality.
